Small business: Easy to do WHS

Project status: Complete

How can small businesses tackle WHS when they already have a full plate?

With the Easy to Do WHS Toolkit!

Small business makes up the majority of registered businesses in NSW and Australia.

Small Business owners largely don’t have the resource or budget available to get advice on WHS legislation. This can lead to misinterpretation or neglect of their WHS duties as a business.

With a mix of part-time, casual workers, and often family members, the oversight of responsibilities can put the health and safety of small business owners and their teams at risk of harm.

Focusing on the small to create a big impact

In partnership with JWS Research, we first approached the problem by reaching out to small business workers across a number of industries, as well as government and industry stakeholders. We used the feedback to help develop a Toolkit that could be accessed by small businesses.

Through two additional phases of research, trialling and receiving feedback on the Toolkit, we were able to build evidence to deliver a resource that will effectively guide small businesses in their WHS responsibilities.

Working with SafeWork NSW, we converted the toolkit into an online version that is available and free for small businesses.

The toolkit includes interactive checklists and digitised action plans tailored to each user.
