On 13 August 2019, the Centre for Work Health and Safety (Centre) hosted the nation's work health and safety (WHS) thought leaders, who came together to share knowledge and theories in the changing world of work.

The forum was the first of its kind in the Australian landscape, and brought together WHS academics from across the country to collaborate and network on an array of disciplines for the benefit of WHS science.

The day examined new ideas in topical sessions where current research was shared and new perspectives gained. The Colloquium provided a platform for high profile speakers, leading researchers and the next generation of scholars to shape future thinking in this important field.

The Research Showcase saw 15 inspirational presentations on a wide-array of research currently being undertaken by experts from the Centre and Australian Universities. Up-and-coming WHS experts were also profiled with a number of PhD candidates holding poster presentation sessions, providing an opportunity to showcase their studies to leaders in WHS research.

The Colloquium's keynote speaker was Michael Tooma, who is widely recognised as Australia’s WHS legal expert. He is an honorary lecturer at UNSW, ANU and Edith Cowan University. Michael’s address focussed on the case for global regulation of industrial safety and is a champion for due diligence and a positive investigation methodology.

The day also held a session to workshop the new, current and emerging challenges in WHS for potential themes for the 2023 World Congress on Safety & Health at Work to be held in Sydney.
