Safety Climate Scales

Safety climate surveys measure workers' perceptions of how their workplace approaches work health and safety.

What are safety climate surveys?

Safety climate surveys measure workers' perceptions of how their workplace approaches work health and safety.

Workers are asked questions about various aspects of work health and safety in their workplace and an overall safety climate 'score' is calculated based on their responses. Since different industries face different work health and safety challenges, the Centre for Work Health and Safety has developed individual safety climate surveys for several high-risk industries.

What are the benefits?

  • Safety climate is known as a 'leading safety indicator': a workplace with a higher safety climate score is more likely to have better safety behaviours and fewer injuries in the future.
  • Safety climate has also been linked to important outcomes such as job satisfaction, engagement, and wellbeing/mental health.
  • These safety climate surveys therefore provide crucial insights that can be used by an organisation to identify and track aspects of work health and safety that need improvement.
