Work health and safety harms affecting in-home carers

Project status: Active

Who cares for the unique needs of the carer?

The Royal Commissions into both Aged Care and Disability have highlighted the specific risks and harms associated with in-home care workers.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen an increase in digital platforms that are reshaping business models in the sector, creating a rise to a ‘gig economy’ that didn’t exist previously. There has been a significant increase in the hire of in-home aged and disability carers through these digital labour platforms which raises concerns about proper training on top of the existing challenges in-home care workers already face.

Exploring the culture of care for carers

Through this study, we will identify and understand the types of WHS risks, harms, and impacts to in-home care workers hired through digital and traditional platforms.

We have teamed up with the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT Australia) to conduct this research with a focus on understanding:

  • current training these workers receive to keep them safe on the job;
  • potential health risks created through different models of hire;
  • support materials home care companies provide;
  • the experiences and thoughts of workers on training and safety measures offered.

The team will also look at how other industries (domestically and internationally) are trying to prevent worker harm and the effectiveness of solutions being used.

Watch this space for the results of the research project, where we will deliver an evidence-based framework and guidance tools to support in-home care workers.
