Research question

Can measuring safety culture help improve an organisation’s safety behaviours?

What is this research about?

Despite known risks and measures to control these risks, workplace incidents continue to occur in several key industries. Shifting the focus from physical risk controls, this project aims to influence the safety culture to drive improved safety performance.

Timeline

This project is now complete.

What the researchers looked at?

In our 'Using machinery safely’ research, the production and use of an industry specific safety culture tool was proven to be important to organisations in identifying and tracking areas of WHS improvement. Building on this evidence base, the project developed safety climate survey tools that are bespoke for six high-risk industries within the key priority sectors identified in the WHS Roadmap for NSW 2022.

These sectors and industries include:

  • Manufacturing: Meat processing
  • Transport: Long distance road freight
  • Construction: Residential construction
  • Public administration and safety: Security
  • Health care and social assistance: Disability support
  • Agriculture, forestry and fishing: Mixed livestock farming
